Stop What You’re Doing and Do What You Want

‘Do what you love and never work a day in your life’ – I know, it’s a bit of a cliché, but how can any of us deny its truth?

Don’t waste time. Seriously. If you’re not happy about what you’re doing, be it with your career or with your life in general – Stop doing it! Forget about your commitments or the security provided by your miserable job and the boring people you work with. If it doesn’t make you happy, or at least, if it leads you to question exactly what it is you’re doing with your life on a daily basis – why are you doing it? Seriously ask yourself. If you don’t know the answer, it’s time to stop. Take some time, think about exactly what it is you want to do – and go do that instead!

In fact, this applies to everything you do. Be more intentional with your life. Never say yes to anything unless it’s going to have a profound impact on your life. Why waste your time otherwise? Sure, there are loads of things you can do for which you will be paid very well, enabling you to put nice food on the table; but if deep down it means nothing to you, ultimately makes you miserable and leaves you without purpose, it’s nothing. Seriously, what is the point of it? Instant gratification may feel good in the short-term, but can be extremely damaging over time.

Time – there’s a valuable commodity. Everyone has it and in equal measure, yet so few people ever appreciate it’s value. You can spend your whole life trying to earn lots of money to fuel your massive mortgage, for the family that has come to expect a certain lifestyle that you must maintain at all costs, lest it comes crashing down around you. Or, you can take a step back, think about what really matters to you in life and what you really want to achieve, and go do that instead. It may seem like a huge leap, but nothing great ever happens without sacrifice.

Imagine living a life where you spend every day doing something you actually care about. Imagine a world where the morning alarm clock doesn’t exist, at least not in any negative sense. Imagine YOUR life – what is your purpose? What were you put on this earth to do? What tools do you have at your disposal and how can you use these to live your life the way you want? What is your ‘Why’?

As humans have evolved and continue to do so, we have become more and more concerned with stuff of total insignificance. We become frustrated when trains are delayed, when somebody suddenly switches lanes on the motorway or if weather happens and it rains on our way home from work. Guess what – you can’t change this crap, it just happens, so why waste your energy worrying about it?

Be in control of the things you can change, such as your sense of purpose, your habits, your work, your ‘self’ awareness and the people you spend your time with. Have a positive impact on yourself, get out of your own way and start fulfilling your true potential. Discover what it is you’re passionate about and do everything you can to spend most of your time doing it – everything else will work itself out from there.
